In a Canadian welding shop, the first question at an interview is rarely about your school. It is usually: «Which CWB tickets do you have?»
Those small cards tell an employer exactly which processes and positions you have already proven you can weld.
This guide explains what CWB tickets are, what welder jobs in Canada pay in 2026 and how to go from beginner to journeyperson.
What welders do in Canada
Welders join and cut metal parts using heat. In Canada they work in steel fabrication shops, structural steel construction, shipyards, pipeline and oil and gas projects, manufacturing plants, farm equipment makers and repair shops. In the national classification they fall under NOC 72106, which also includes brazing and soldering operators. Typical tasks in 2026 postings include welding structural steel and custom fabrications, reading drawings, following welding procedures, checking their own work for quality and keeping a safe, clean work area.
Some employers hire welder-fitters, who also measure, cut and fit parts together before welding them. Combining both skills usually means more job options.
Welding in brief
✔ CWB stands for Canadian Welding Bureau.
✔ Many shops say a valid welding ticket is mandatory.
✔ Welder is a Red Seal trade with a full apprenticeship path.
✔ 2026 postings range from about $20 to $38 per hour.
What a CWB ticket means
The Canadian Welding Bureau certifies companies that do structural welding and tests welders who work for those companies. When you pass a CWB test, you receive a ticket for a specific process, such as flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), metal-cored arc welding (MCAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW, often called MIG), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW, or stick) or gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW, or TIG). Each ticket also covers specific positions, from flat and horizontal to vertical and overhead, which are harder.
This is why job ads are so precise. A shop in Ardrossan, Alberta, for example, asked for valid CWB tickets in both FCAW and MCAW, while a Kitchener fabrication company mentioned working with CWB procedures. Tickets must be kept current, usually through regular work under a certified company or retesting, so ask your employer how renewals are handled.
What welders earn in 2026

Government data gives a useful reference: Job Bank lists a median wage of $28.13 per hour for welders in Quebec’s Chaudière-Appalaches region and $28.50 in the Centre-du-Québec region. Night shifts, field work, pipeline jobs and special processes like TIG on stainless steel or aluminum usually pay more than basic shop work.
Shop work or field work?
Shop work takes place inside a fabrication plant with fixed hours. One Alberta shop advertised Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with no shift work. It is a good fit for people who want a stable routine and to be home every night. Shops also offer more mentoring, since journeypersons often coach apprentices on site.
Field work means welding on construction sites, pipelines, mines or industrial plants, often outdoors and sometimes far from home. It can involve long rotations, camps and travel, but it usually pays higher wages and overtime. Many welders start in a shop and move to the field once they have more tickets and experience.
Paths into welding
College or pre-employment program. Colleges across Canada offer welding programs from a few months to a year. They teach safety, blueprint reading and the main processes, and many prepare students to take their first CWB tests. Some programs count toward the first level of apprenticeship.
On-the-job training. Some fabrication companies say they will train new welders to suit their specific work. Starting as a helper, grinder or fitter’s helper can lead to welding once you show care and safe habits.
Apprenticeship and Red Seal. To become a journeyperson welder, you register as an apprentice with your provincial authority, combine work hours with technical training, and pass the certification exam. Since welder is a Red Seal trade, the final certificate can carry the Red Seal endorsement. Several 2026 postings require a journeyperson Red Seal or provincial ticket, while others accept 2nd or 3rd year apprentices.
Advice for welders trained abroad
If you learned welding in another country, your experience is valuable, but Canadian employers will still want proof in Canadian terms. The fastest route is usually to take CWB tests through an employer or a testing centre, because a ticket shows your skill immediately. At the same time, contact your provincial apprenticeship authority to ask whether your years of experience can be assessed so you can challenge the certification exam. Bring letters from previous employers that describe the processes, materials and positions you welded, and learn the English or French names of each process, since interviews and safety training will use them.
Safety and health on the job
Welding involves intense light, heat, fumes and heavy parts. Employers provide or require protective equipment such as a welding helmet with the right shade, flame-resistant clothing, gloves, safety boots and hearing protection, plus ventilation or respirators in enclosed spaces. WHMIS training is standard, and confined space or fall protection training may be needed for field work. Taking these rules seriously from day one protects your eyes, lungs and long-term career.
How to stand out when you apply
List every ticket you hold with the process and position, and bring copies to interviews. Include the types of materials you have welded, such as mild steel, stainless or aluminum, and any experience reading drawings or fitting. If you are new, mention school projects and practice tests. In Quebec, many shops work in French, so language skills can make a real difference. Finally, keep your tickets up to date: some recruiters only contact candidates with valid CWB tickets.
